- Neuromyelitis optic (NMO) is a disorder of the central nervous system that mainly affects the nerves of the eye (optic neuritis) and the spinal cord (myelitis). NMO is also known as Neuromyelitis Optic Spectrum Disorder or Devic’s Disease. It happens when your body’s immune system reacts against its own central nervous system cells, mainly in the optic nerves and spinal cord, but sometimes in the brain as well.
- The cause of optic neuromyelitis is usually unknown, although it sometimes occurs after infection or can be associated with another autoimmune disease. Neuromyelitis optics is often mistakenly diagnosed as multiple sclerosis (MS) or viewed as a type of MS, but NMO is a separate condition.
